Pick up your phone right now. How does it feel?
Does it feel calm and easy to use? Or does it feel a little cluttered, a little heavy, like there’s more going on than you can keep track of?
For most people, it’s the second one. And you’ve probably felt that way for a long time. It just feels normal now. You never quite set aside the time to do anything about it.
That feeling has a name. It’s called digital clutter, and a digital declutter is how you clear it out.
Think about a drawer in your house. Not the tidy one. The one that’s a little too full to close all the way. The one where things collected over time, one item at a time, until it became the drawer you avoid opening.
Nobody decides to have a drawer like that. It just happens, gradually, until one day you open it and wonder how it got so bad.
Your phone has been doing the exact same thing.
Think about the apps you downloaded on a whim. The notification permission you tapped without really thinking about it. The screenshots you saved for later and never looked at again. A subscription you forgot you signed up for. A camera roll that grew from a hundred photos to thousands without you ever making a conscious decision to let that happen.
And just like that overstuffed drawer, your brain eventually stops seeing it. You scroll past the apps you never use, swipe away notifications you don’t care about. You work around the clutter without realizing that’s what you’re doing, until it starts shaping your habits.
Some researchers have looked at what this constant digital presence does to our attention. A 2023 study out of Paderborn University tested whether just having a smartphone nearby, even face down and silent, affects how well people can focus. The results suggested it does reduce attention in the moment. It’s worth noting this is a debated area of research, and not every study agrees on how big that effect actually is. But even without a definitive answer from the research, most of us already know the feeling. Your brain is aware your phone is there, even when you’re not using it.
Now imagine what a cluttered phone, on top of that constant presence, is doing to your focus every single day.
A cluttered phone isn’t just an aesthetic problem. It can chip away at your attention span. And that often trickles into your mind, into your heart, and eventually into your peace. If you care about being present and intentional in how you live out your faith, this becomes a stewardship question. What you carry in your pocket all day is shaping you, whether you’ve noticed it or not.
Earlier this year, the first workshop in the Made Simple Series launched. It’s called Focus Modes Made Simple, and it walks you through the built-in Focus tool most people have never explored on their phone. Maybe you know it’s there, but you’ve only ever used it to hit Do Not Disturb. There’s so much more you can set up and personalize. The response to that workshop was fantastic, and many of you said it was exactly the practical help you’d been looking for.
Now the second workshop in the series is here. It’s called Phone Declutter Made Simple, and it’s built to change how your phone feels every single day you use it.
Here’s the thread running through the whole thing. This isn’t just about a tidier screen. Scripture calls us to guard our hearts because everything flows from it. What’s on your phone doesn’t always stay on your phone. It often ends up in your mind, your habits, your attention, and your peace. A digital declutter is one of the most practical acts of stewardship over your inner life you can take.
Inside Phone Declutter Made Simple, you’ll find a phone declutter audit that walks you through five different clutter zones on your own phone, so you can see exactly where your clutter is heaviest. You’ll identify your priority zone first, instead of trying to tackle everything at once.
You’ll also get declutter checklists, a phone intentions guide to keep you accountable, and how-to guides for both iPhone and Android, so it doesn’t matter which device you use. As a bonus, there’s a Calm Wallpaper Gallery, a collection of simple wallpapers for your lock screen or home screen, so what you see when you pick up your phone is something intentional and peaceful instead of another notification badge.
This workshop is practical and rooted in biblical principles. A digital declutter is one of the most satisfying things you can do for your focus and your peace, because you feel the results right away. It’s the same feeling as finally cleaning out that closet or organizing the junk drawer.

A few stats put this in perspective.
Industry data from 2025 and 2026 shows the average smartphone has somewhere between 60 and 90 apps installed on it. Most people actively use only about 9 of them on any given day. And a portion of apps, some studies put it around one in four, are opened exactly once after being downloaded, then never touched again.
That means most of what’s on your phone is sitting there, taking up space and quietly pulling at your attention, without ever serving you in any real way.
Does any of that sound familiar?
Your phone has likely been accumulating clutter the same quiet, gradual way a junk drawer does. And the longer it goes unaddressed, the more there is to sort through when you finally do.
A digital declutter doesn’t have to mean a total phone overhaul in one sitting. Start small and build momentum.
On iPhone → Go to Settings, then Screen Time, then See All Activity, to get an honest look at which apps you’re actually using.
On Android → Go to Settings, then Digital Wellbeing and Parental Controls, to see the same kind of breakdown.
Once you can see it clearly, pick one clutter zone to start with instead of trying to fix everything at once. That’s exactly what the Phone Declutter Made Simple workshop walks you through, step by step.
What is a digital declutter?
A digital declutter is the process of clearing out the apps, notifications, files, and digital habits that build up over time without you noticing. It’s not just your phone. The same clutter builds up on your laptop, your tablet, and any other device you use every day, and clearing it makes all of them feel calmer and easier to use.
How long does a digital declutter take?
It depends on how much has built up, but most people can see a noticeable difference after tackling just one clutter zone, which usually takes less than an hour.
Why does my phone feel overwhelming even when I’m not using it?
Notifications, unused apps, and an overflowing camera roll all add background mental load, even when your phone is sitting face down and silent.
Your phone was never meant to feel overwhelming. It was meant to be a tool that supports your life, not one that runs it.
If you’re ready to clear the clutter and get some peace back, Phone Declutter Made Simple gives you a head start on clearing out the clutter and a clear path forward. You can find out more information about the workshop and discover the five clutter zones on your phone!
