Hey, I’m Julianne!
Coach, encourager, digital distraction disruptor. I help people reduce their screen time, build life-giving habits, and stay focused on what matters most. The digital world isn’t going away, but your distraction can. So glad you’re here!
Welcome!
May 27, 2025
This morning I stood in my kitchen making coffee, and without even thinking, I checked my phone 4 times in 3 minutes. Four times! And I didn’t even need anything from it. If you’re longing for a simple digital declutter approach that creates lasting change, you’re in the right place.
It was that familiar autopilot reaching – you know the one? Like my hands had a mind of their own.
What if these screens we check dozens, maybe hundreds, of times each day could actually help redirect our hearts toward God, not just something pretty or mindlessly distracting?
That’s the invitation I want to extend to you today: a simple but powerful 3-step digital declutter that focuses on the three things your eyes encounter countless times each day: your lock screen, your home screen, and your notifications.
Small changes in these three areas can dramatically shift your digital landscape and, more importantly, your spiritual attention.
Your lock screen is the gateway to everything else on your device. It’s what you see dozens, maybe hundreds of times a day. Every time you check the time, every time you reach for a distraction, every time your phone lights up, there it is.
What if we intentionally transformed this digital doorway into a spiritual anchor point?
Here’s the practical invitation: Choose an image for your lock screen that points your heart toward God and those you love, not just something pretty.
You might select:
I changed mine last month to a simple black background with the words “Perfect Peace” from Isaiah 26:3: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in you.”
Those words have become a breath prayer every time I reach for my phone. It’s amazing how many times a day I now repeat that Scripture, simply because it’s what I see first.
One dad I know chose a picture of his kids with the words “These are the days” as his reminder that these years are precious and fleeting. Every time he’s tempted to mindlessly check his phone, he’s first reminded of what really matters.
What might your lock screen become, not just as decoration, but as direction for your heart?
Once you are past your lock screen, the home screen is where the digital noise really begins. Those little colourful icons aren’t just shortcuts to apps, they’re portals to potential distraction.
Take a moment and look at your home screen right now. What’s front and center? What apps are positioned for immediate access? And what does that arrangement say about your priorities?
Here’s the practical invitation: Rearrange your home screen to reflect your true priorities, not just your frequent habits.
As part of your digital declutter journey, consider these steps:
I recently helped a friend reorganize her home screen, and she told me later, “It’s like I’ve taken back control of my attention. When I unlock my phone now, I see my Bible app, my prayer journal app, and photos of my family first, not social media. The difference in my day is remarkable.”
For me, keeping only tools, not “treats” as I like to call them, on my home screen has been transformational. Social media, news, and the Amazon app now live on a secondary screen that requires an extra swipe or two and a moment of intentional choice. That tiny bit of friction has been enough to make me pause and ask, “Is this really how I want to spend the next few moments of my day?”
Leave a little intentional space between impulse and action.
The third step in our digital declutter focuses on something that’s constantly bidding for your attention: notifications. Those little red dots, banners, and alerts aren’t neutral they’re actually designed to pull you back into apps over and over again.
In Scripture, we’re told to “take every thought captive” (2 Corinthians 10:5), but it’s hard to practice that spiritual discipline when our thoughts are constantly being hijacked by notifications.
Here’s the practical invitation: Reclaim your focus and attention by deciding what actually deserves to interrupt your life. Be ruthless here!
Consider these steps:
Focus Mode is like having a faithful guardian for your attention. It allows you to create custom notification profiles for different parts of your day or different activities in your life. Think of it as creating sacred spaces in your digital day, times when you can be fully present with your family, your work, or your rest.
Let me walk you through how to set this up on your phone:
For iPhone Users:
For Android Users:
Here are some focus modes I’ve found particularly helpful in my own walk with God:
1. Morning Focus If you keep your phone near you in the morning for the Bible app or a digital journal, set it to activate automatically at a certain time.
2. Family Focus
3. Sabbath Focus
4. Work/Ministry Focus
I’ve personally found that creating a screen-free rhythm for the first hour of my day and the last hour before bed has been revolutionary for my spiritual life. That boundary means God gets the first word in my day and the last word at night, not Instagram, not the news, not my email.
So – the 3-Step digital declutter transforms your lock screen, declutters your home screen, and tames your notifications. For some of you, these steps might seem insignificant or small. But remember, we serve a God who specializes in using small, faithful actions to create significant spiritual transformation.
Think about David gathering five smooth stones before facing Goliath. Consider the widow offering her two small coins at the temple. Remember the boy with just five loaves and two fish.
In God’s economy, small acts of faithful stewardship matter deeply.
So that is the question I am leaving you with – How are you stewarding your digital life?
Choose just one of these three areas to focus on. Don’t try to overhaul everything all at once. Maybe start with your lock screen, that simple gateway that you see so many times each day.
Take five minutes today to select an image and words that will redirect your heart each time you reach for your phone. Let that one small change begin to shape your digital habits.
Little by little, screen by screen, notification by notification, we can take back our attention and direct our hearts toward what truly matters.
